This was produced to show people that the mass media do not control every aspect of our lives. MTV may tell lots of kids what to listen to, what to wear and inevitably, what to think. Trendy clothes chains may tell us what is ‘in’ and what is ‘out’, they are culture pirates, picking up a style such as punk, ripping it to pieces and moving on to the next. Mass Media culture may only last for a matter of months with celebrities crossing our screens and disappearing, being famous for nothing except money. Pop bands may continue to be manufactured, used as a product and then ditched, but we, the D.I.Y culture, are here to stay.
While MTV drills the same manufactured songs repetitively into people’s brains we miss the inequalities that rid our world. Huge corporations stand where local business used to be, large multinationals act as a cloning tool, we eat the same, listen to the same music and wear the same clothes, they seek to destroy culture and replace it with consumption and capitalism. IMF and the World Bank fuck over the third world while we go to burger king and pump more money into the circling capitalism system. Imperialist dictators are committing genocide and all we do is listen to what we are told.
Well we are here to tell them, FUCK YOU, we are here to make a stand; we are here to say we disagree with mass consumerism and destruction of culture and free thought. D.I.Y culture is ours, not MTV’s, not McDonalds and not the Governments. Our culture is based on solidarity not money, our culture is based on love and essentially mutual aid, and lets not forget fucking good music. We have a message, and we will continue to undermine mass culture until something gives. We will push and push, exposing the poverty and corruption that manifests itself in our world, spreading the word and living our lives the way we want to, not the way we are told!
